Algal Ecophysiology Laboratory
University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute
Welcome to our lab! Our research activities focus on the study of the biology, biochemistry, and ecophysiology of tropical marine macroalgae. Research on the growth, physiology, and biochemical performance of economically and ecologically important macroalgal species will help us better understand their biological responses to environmental stress and changing ocean chemistry. We also investigate the important role of light and photosynthesis in algal growth by looking at gene expression under different environmental conditions. More over, our current research projects are motivated by the goal of identifying and developing promising strains that will ultimately help improve seaweed farming and the seaweed industry. Aiming for a greener planet, the lab is also in collaboration with our German counterparts to develop bio-packaging materials made from seaweeds that is more sustainable and earth friendly.
The team of researchers is led by Dr. Roleda, a new faculty member of the UP Marine Science Institute. |
